Clemente

May 15th. Clemente finished his armadillo today and pulled a few prints. He is one of the main artists here who does the black and white drawings, but for his day-job he's a store clerk in his community.

While the image looks great, we all agreed that he cut away too much of the black, and it would be more successful had he left larger black areas. I had suggested to tone his plate prior to cutting (i.e. add a grey tone so it's easier to see how much to cut), but he didn't want to. He already started drawing on a second plate. It takes some trial and error when starting a new technique, especially where the final image isn't directly evident while being worked on. I'm amazed at the persistence of all participants. Nobody is getting discouraged if things aren't working perfectly right away.
